The Dragons Look Different When You Study the Map

Here be dragons.

That phrase was once used to mark the unknown.

Uncharted waters. Unfamiliar territory. Places people had not fully explored yet.

It was not always a warning to stay away.

Sometimes it was an invitation to prepare.

That is how business ownership feels for a lot of people.

They are curious about it. They wonder what it would be like to build something of their own. They think about having more control over their time, income, future, and impact.

Then the dragons show up.

What if I fail?

What if I lose money?

What if I choose the wrong business?

What if I am not qualified?

What if I leave something stable and regret it?

Those are real questions. They should not be ignored.

But fear and due diligence are not the same thing.

Fear says, “Don’t look.”

Due diligence says, “Let’s understand what is actually there.”

That is the difference.

Exploring business ownership does not mean quitting your job tomorrow. It does not mean betting everything on an idea. It does not mean forcing yourself into a path that does not fit your life, finances, family, or risk tolerance.

It means getting educated.

It means asking better questions.

What kind of life am I trying to build?

What level of income do I actually need?

How much capital am I comfortable putting at risk?

How much runway do I have?

Do I want to operate the business myself, lead a team, or stay semi-absentee?

What kind of support would I need?

What kind of business would fit my strengths, not just my interests?

What am I trying to create that my current career may never provide?

Those questions matter.

Because the unknown is only dangerous when you refuse to study it.

Beth and I started exploring this path late last year. We did not begin with all the answers. We began with curiosity, questions, and a willingness to see what might be possible.

Last week, that exploration became much more real.

We got the keys to the future home of our Vertica Fitness studio.

There are a lot of people to thank for helping us get to this point, but I want to give a special thank you to Michelle Jones, Katrina Wyckoff, and Sean Hansen.

You helped us see the bigger vision for what this could become, and your guidance, encouragement, and belief in the concept made a real impact on our journey.

This business is not replacing my current business. It is part of building something additional. Another source of income. Another source of fulfillment. Another way to create impact in our community.

And that impact matters to us.

Vertica Fitness is not just another workout space. It is a place where people can build strength, confidence, and connection in an environment that feels supportive and safe.

Now the real work begins.

Buildout.

Pre-sales.

Hiring.

Training.

Learning.

Problem solving.

Probably a few late nights and a few “what did we just sign up for?” conversations.

But that is part of it.

The map is not fully drawn yet.

There are still unknowns.

There may even be dragons.

But sometimes the life worth building is found on the other side of the waters you were once afraid to explore.

And this next chapter feels worth exploring.
